Tiger Bay State Forest, FL

We’ve got a whole lotta hubbub in the form of tiny humans and siblings coming to play with us in Dyna in the coming weeks. So, we decided to go hide out in the forest for a bit as a sort of ‘preparation for impending joyful chaos’. We pulled into the Tiger Bay State Forest Equestrian campground on a Sunday afternoon, and for the next few days we were treated to fresh air and zero companionship in the form of human neighbors. We were also treated to the nightly calls of a bird that a ranger later informed us was…

Savannah, GA

“More butter!” Ok, but first, I better go for a run.   When you roll into the the city of the Queen of Butter, you need to make plans to balance out some of the sin. Long story shortened to weed out details that only other long distance runners crave hearing: I ran another 26 mile race, again, without training. Because I clearly learned my lesson from running a long race without training for a long race the previous 2 times.  It’s so hard to resist the temptation of an organized long run when the course loops around your home for…

Charleston, SC

We rolled into Charleston’s James Island County Park with a (hard fought) reservation for 2 weeks – split between 3 separate ‘sites’. The first site was deemed ‘the worst site in the park’ by two separate park employees. The second site was a giant field behind the park where we could park without hook-ups. The third site was a handicap accessible site (score!). Moral of the story: if you want to stay in/near Charleston, you should probably reserve yourself a spot earlier than a month before. Or, you could have a ‘Jake’, who is willing to call parks multiple times…

Myrtle Beach, SC

We were going to head straight from the Charlotte area to Charleston. But then, as we were assessing the map for our route, we noticed Myrtle Beach hanging around – neither of us have ever been. So, we tinkered around with possible parks to stay in Myrtle Beach and Jake found a ‘snow bird special’ rate at the State Park. We love deals. We got very excited and called the nice park host lady and they had openings in the back of the park. The deal was for a month stay, which we weren’t convinced we wanted to commit to. But, paying for…

Lake Norman, NC

We have some really brilliant ideas on occasion.  Our latest piece of brilliance was an attempt to boondock within the compounds of Scott’s apartment complex. We got 2 nights of free rent before being evicted abruptly. At least the eviction was using our own throttle rather than a tow truck (we’ve been told the towing bill on a 40′ house on wheels is not easy to swallow). I’d say our attempt to live with Scott for a few weeks was a good try, but ultimately, a fail. Which is how we ended up at a semi-creepy, semi-beautiful, definitely over priced campground on…

Asheville, NC

So, I guess it snows in Asheville. And by “I guess” I mean, yes, it definitely snows. We have proof. But, now we can state: ‘We survived our first real snow in Dyna!’ It wasn’t bad at all. Probably because we’re from NY and are snow professionals. But mostly because Dyna’s previous owner (hey Edward!) kindly left a portable heater in a bay (aka, our basement) when he passed Dyna along to us. Thank goodness for that little electric heater. With our blinds and curtains drawn and that little heater pumping we were plenty toasty. And since we were present with Dyna…

Nashville, TN (2)

On the drive back to Nashville, TN from NY, Jake felt it coming. The ache. Except this time, it wasn’t the ‘adventure’ ache. It was the ‘oh shit, my head aches’ ache. We had been had. Had by the awesomeness of being surrounded by our people. And had by the wretched diseases they (especially their 5 year old ranks) carried. Yep, for the first time since we started our mobile lifestyle (18 months!) – Jake was getting sick. Which inevitably meant I would also be getting sick. Probably because we spend most of our time within 10 feet of each…
