Hitting the Brakes: Life with Dyna in the Time of COVID-19

Our apocalypse mobile… it’s not overly pandemic proof. I expect it is not a completely uncommon topic of conversation amongst the nomadic RV set, or those who befriend them: “Sure, access to reliable healthcare is a doozy, but if there is ever a zombie apocalypse – this RV is going to be clutch for riding it out!” Jake and I have held variations of this conversation amongst ourselves – with the added commentary of “you better come pick me up if there is a zombie apocalypse!” from friends when it’s discussed in a public setting. We were clearly not taking…

Kicked Around Florida: Vero Beach & Melbourne

After being non-physically forcefully ejected from Jonathan Dickinson State Park due to Coronavirus induced closures of all Florida State Parks, we ended up at a private RV park in Vero Beach, Florida. No fun at Sunshine Travel RV Resort. #thankscorona We were able to snag a spot at the RV park due to the plight of Canadian snowbirds, most of whom had to end their trysts in warmer weather in order to get back across the Canadian border for fear of further border restrictions. When we called, we were quoted a $60/night price point, and guaranteed a campsite for the…

Jupiter, FL

We settled into our campsite at Jonathan Dickinson State Park (apparently Florida really enjoys naming state parks after bros names ‘Jonathan’) with hopes of running a 6-hour ultramarathon in preparation for a 100-mile ultramarathon that was on my calendar for later in April. Jonathan Dickinson State Park A few days into our stay at Jonathan Dickinson, the 6-hour had been cancelled. And then the 100-miler had been cancelled. And then our campsite at the state park had been cancelled. C&O 100 Miler is cancelled. Coronavirus may have made its debut on the shores of the U.S.A in January, but in…

Key Largo, FL

I was pretty stoked about Key Largo, and our impending arrival and five day stay in Key Largo. Mostly because of the Beach Boys and the Kokomo song, which was a top 5 hit in the life and times of Liz aged 4 years to 10 years. Key Largo side road ocean dead end The Beach Boys really set me up for disappointment. Or maybe Curry Hammock did that. Key Largo is still ‘the Keys’, but it’s right at the top of the shaft. And it’s thicker and provides less accessibility to the ocean than our previous locale in Marathon.…

Marathon, FL

We made the 7 hour by Dyna drive from Apopka, Florida to Marathon in the Florida Keys in a single day – we were so excited. We don’t usually like to haul more than 5 hours in a typical day, unless we’re doing a long haul rest area overnight situation. But when you’re headed to the Keys, you make the drive. Scott snapping pics from his perch in the back. No, that TV has never fallen on my head. We took a break at Jake’s favorite place to eat – True Food. Because he’s Jake and since its his favorite…

Apopka, FL

Scott was the surprise. Scott, Jake, and some Impossible Whoppers, ever heard of it? For those of you who read the blog that is previous to this blog, chronologically, and also in the order I expect and recommend you read these blogs while you sit atop your porcelain thrones – I mentioned a surprise. A surprise that Jake, with his ‘always striving for better’ tendency, kept jacking up because he kept changing our Dyna plans and my secret plan was dependent on where we would be and what we would be doing in Dyna. The surprise was Scott. Jake’s best…

Clermont, FL – & A Cruise

And another thing! About Florida! Cam & Liss live here now. So that’s another reason we decided to come to Florida. They used to live in Myrtle Beach, pretty near the only glory hole I’ve ever seen in real life and also near the world’s greatest yoga teacher named Javier. We used to stay in Myrtle Beach because they were there. But now, they live in Florida. So now, we have to go to Florida to see them. But here’s the problem. Cam & Liss (we love them so much) are FREAKING IDIOTS. We specifically told them to only rent…

Thonotosassa, FL

Ever just be driving a behemoth vehicle down a road, minding your own very large business and happen to look in your rear view camera, which happens to be circa 2001 and therefore provides very little in the way of actual rear-sight action? And through the grainy black and white graphics you spot an older couple riding their bikes? And then you damned near chit your pants because you know that the range of the camera on the rear of your huge rolling rectangle house is all of about 10 feet? Too close for comfort. Ok, so just me? #OKBOOMERS…

Fort De Soto, FL

Jake snagged us two weeks in a campsite at Fort De Soto County Park just south of St. Petersburg Florida for late January through early February. For those who are unaware, this is a decently impressive feat. Garnering more than a night or two in a single campsite at Fort De Soto without playing the ‘sit at the computer 11 months in advance at 8 a.m. ready to hit the reserve button’ game is damned-near championship level. Fort De Soto Jake got us two full-weeks. In the same campsite. 2 weeks before our arrival. Jake is cool. My new home…

Florida RV Super Show

Jake has been talking about attending a major RV show for years now. And while I have other pressing priorities (Kentucky Derby, for example, which involved funner things like HORSES), sometimes I let Jake do one thing that he wants to do. Apparently that thing was the Florida RV Super Show. Florida RV Show 2020 And luckily for him, the Florida RV Super Show ended up being very enjoyable for me. Otherwise there may have been tantrums and such and nobody really wants to deal with a grown-ass 30 something year old woman throwing herself on the ground and whining.…
